《開発のきっかけ》
故 C.W.ニコル氏が生前、小牧蒸溜所に託してくださった想いに遡ります。
その想いとは、“世界に日本の蒸溜酒である焼酎を広めていくこと”です。
世界 4 大スピリッツのひとつとして愛飲されているジン。
ニコル氏はジンのベースを焼酎にすることで、焼酎を海外へ伝えていくことができると考えていました。
2020 年、ニコル氏は永い眠りにつかれましたが、私どもは想いを受け継ぎ、
甥であり、醸造家でもある Kokoro GIN のジェームズ・ニコル氏らと共に
焼酎ベースの「ITO 糸 GIN」 の開発に努めてまいりました。
完成までに約 5 年。
晴れてニコル氏の誕生日である 2023 年 7 月 17 日(月)国内先行リリース
させていただきました。
《故 C.W.ニコル氏が大切にしていた蒸溜酒への想い》
故 C.W.ニコル氏が日本の蒸溜酒・焼酎にこだわった背景に、氏の高祖叔父（おじいさんのご兄弟）にあたる方がニッカウヰスキーの創業者・竹鶴政孝氏との深い関わりの中で、ウイスキーの蒸溜技術を伝授したことがあります。
同じ蒸溜酒である焼酎を今度は日本から世界へ。
世界で愛飲されているジンを焼酎で造ることで焼酎が知られる機会となることを信じ、ニコル氏は生前私たちにこう話してくださっていました。
「当時竹鶴氏と高祖叔父のニコルがファミリーだったように、小牧さん兄弟とぼくらはファミリー。 血の繋がり云々ではなく、想いが一緒で心が通じ合っていることが家族の証だから。ぼくらは小牧さんたちと一緒に新しい焼酎の歴史を創っていきたい」と。
その歴史の第一歩となる「ITO 糸 GIN」。
小牧家は 鹿児島薩摩の地より、ニコル家は英国の地よりひとつのファミリーとして「日本の蒸溜酒・焼酎を世界 に」という想いを形にしていく所存です。
ちなみにニコル氏と焼酎の出会いは、捕鯨船の中にエピソードがあります。
生態調査のために日本の 捕鯨船に乗って南氷洋に赴いた際に、鹿児島出身の
船長が“薩摩焼酎”をふるまってくれたことがきっかけとなりました。
明治・大正・昭和の時代を駆け抜け、もともと氏のルーツである英国との
関わりが深い 「薩摩」。
捕鯨船での経験をもとに、西洋との出会いに揺れる幕末の若き主人公を書き上げた歴史小説 『勇魚』(鯨の古名)でも、薩摩は舞台のひとつになっています。
《C.W.ニコル氏》
C.W.ニコル氏 作家・１９４０年イギリス南ウェールズ生まれ。
１９９５年日本国籍取得。
カナダ水産調査局北極生物研究所の技官・環境局の環境問題 緊急対策官や
エチオピアのシミエン山岳国立公園の公園長など世界各地で環境保護活動を行い、１９８０年から長野県在住。
１９８４年から荒れ果てた里山を購入し「アファンの森」と名づけ、森の再生活動を始める。
２００５年、その活動が認められエリザベス女王から名誉 大英勲章を賜る。
２０１１年、「アファンの森」が日本ユネスコ協会連盟の「プロジェクト未来遺産」に登録される。
２０１６年、(社)国土緑化推進機 構より「第６回みどりの文化賞」受賞。
２０１６年、天皇、皇后両陛下がアファンの森をご視察された。
《Kokoro GIN》
C.W.ニコル氏がプロデュース、甥にあたるジェームス・ニコル氏が醸造する
ロンドン・ドライジンのカンパニー。
「ITO 糸 GIN」の味わいの監修に携わり、諸外国への流通を担当。
《小牧蒸溜所(小牧醸造株式会社)》
北郷島津家の 13 人の武家来衆の 1 人を祖とし、1909 年(明治 42 年)に
鹿児島県北西部にて本格焼酎製造業 を創業。
代表銘柄は一次・二次とも和甕で仕込み、
昔ながらの技術で醸す「小牧」、
蔵の 100 周 年を記念して誕生した「一尚」、
ベニサツマを原料とする「紅小牧」など。
「ITO 糸 GIN」において は、ベースとなる本格焼酎の製造・蒸溜及び
ボトリングを担当。

薩摩焼酎の歴史は、江戸末期、英国に敗戦し彼の国の偉大さに触れ、西洋式の蒸溜技術の一端を持ち帰ったことに端を発します。
2000 年代に入って、日本国内では本格焼酎ブームが到来し、以来、“味わいを楽しむ”大人の飲み物として親しまれるようになりました。
しかし未だ世界の市 場での認知は薄いのが現実です。
悔しくもニコル氏は永遠の眠りにつかれましたが、我々の技術 を世界をも凌駕する技術と認め、弊社がロゴに込めた「世界で唯一無二の、本当の意味での
一番 となる焼酎づくり」にも共感してくださった氏の想いに商品力で応え、世界に伝えていく所存でございます。
≪新宅商店について≫
小牧蒸溜所・小牧兄弟および蔵とのご縁により、下戸だった店主が小牧蒸溜所の焼酎を飲んで、小牧蒸溜所の想いと焼酎を伝えたく小牧蒸溜所の専門酒屋として創業。
「ITO 糸 GIN」の開発から完成および現在に至るまで、Kokoro GIN、
小牧蒸溜所、アファンの森財団それぞれとのコミュニケーションサポートを担当。
≪「ITO 糸 GIN」ネーミングについて≫
「紡ぐ」ことをテーマにしました。
ニコル氏の想いを世界の人に紡いでいただくことを願い、薩英戦争と いう過去があったにもかかわらず、日英同盟を結ぶまでに至った両国の関係性を大切にしたニコル氏の想 いに応えるべく、戦争が絶えない昨今の世界情勢ではありますが平和を願い「家族の時間や歴史を紡い でいく一杯でありたい」と言う気持ちを込めました。
世界中の方に親しまれる GIN として成長していく とともに、アファンの森財団やニコル氏に想いを巡らせてご愛飲いただけることを願っています。
≪「ITO 糸 GIN」ラベルについて≫
ボタニカルのひとつに用いた鹿児島・温州みかん（英語名：SATSUMA）の色をベースにしました。
左サイドには小牧蒸溜所ロゴと桜島のアイコンを、右サイドにはジェームズ氏の Kokoro GIN ロゴと森の アイコンを配置。バックラベルには、小牧家のルーツである島津十字と鹿児島・錦江湾、ニコル家の代々の柄を組み合わせたロゴを配置しました。

One is his grandfather`s family have a good-relationship with Taketsuru-san that is as patriarch of Japanese whisky trend.
He have passionate as being proud history of the Nicol and Komaki families, joining together in a thoughtful and reflective present, with an eye toward a cherished future.
Another is He met and tasted shochu 1st time on the ship while having worked as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans(Canada), an environment emergency officer for the Department of Environment(Canada). He have passionate against Satsuma and England through writing down the novel of ISANA 勇魚 old-whale as A Author.
《About C.W.Nicol》
Born in South Wales of United Kingdom in 1940. A Author and president of The C.W.Nicol Afan Woodland Trust.
Mr. Nicol worked on environment conservation projects in various parts of the world as an officer for Arctic Biological Station, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans(Canada), an environment emergency officer for the Department of Environment(Canada), and Director of Semien Mountains National Park (Ethiopia).
He has been resident in Nagano Prefecture since 1980, taking up the Japanese citizenship in 1995.
In 1984 he bought a run-down village forest and named it “Afan Forest.” His activities led to the establishment of a foundation in 2002, designed to implement various projects and research conducted in this forest on a national level and serve the benefit of general public.
Mr. Nicol was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2005.
Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan visited “Afan Forest” in 2016. He has written many books including “Hokori takaki nihonjin de itai (I want to be a proud Japanese)”and “Maza-tsuri (Mother tree).”

This product is producred by C.W.Nicol and ditilled by his nephew James. This company is charge of PR, marketing and oversea sales.
《About Komaki Distillery》
Komaki family`s roots is one of 13 members as patriarch respected for Mr.Shimazu. This distillery is established on 1909. the symbolic products is Komaki made by Japanese traditional tecnic, Issho launched by anniversary 100 years and Beni-Komaki based on Beni-satsuma botanical. This company is charge of bottling and manufacturing.

The history of Satsuma shochu is started with the technic of Distill by European based on being inspired by the greatness of England. Early 2000s, the Japanese trend of Shochu in domestic was coming. Japanese people have loved to drink shochu as adult-liquor since early 2000s. But all of world have not known it. We promise to communicate with them through this ITO糸GIN that is based on Satsuma shochu made by us and admired by C.W.Nicol.

《About the label of ITO糸GIN》
The based color is inspired by Satsuma that is one of botanical made in Kagoshima-prefecture.
The left side is put the logo of Komaki distillery and icon of Sakurajima-volcano, The right side is done the logo of Kokoro GIN and icon of forest. Back label is designed based on the Shimazu-cross that is roots of Komaki Distillery, the Kinko-Bay and the family tartan textile of Nicol.
